With the opening match on 11 June now under two weeks away, the qualified nations have started their final warm-up matches. Here is where the last few days have left things, and the fixtures worth following on Sunday.
Recent results
Scotland 4-1 Curacao. Scotland signed off at Hampden Park with a comfortable win, though Curacao made them work for it early. Tahith Chong put the visitors ahead inside 20 minutes before Findlay Curtis levelled with his first international goal. Lawrence Shankland added a brace and Ryan Christie converted from the spot, with Curacao finishing the game a man down. Two qualified sides met here, and Scotland pulled clear in the second half.
Nigeria 3-0 Jamaica. A straightforward evening for Nigeria, who controlled the game throughout and were out of sight by the hour. Neither side reaches the World Cup, so the result carries no tournament weight, but it was a clean run-out for two teams rebuilding through this window.
Egypt 1-0 Russia. Mohamed Salah’s Egypt closed out their final home friendly with a narrow win in Cairo, substitute Mostafa Ziko heading the only goal just after the hour. Egypt are in Group G alongside Belgium, and a clean sheet in their last home test before the tournament is the more useful takeaway than the single goal.
Sunday’s fixtures
Sunday’s schedule is the strongest of the window so far, with five qualified nations in action.
USA vs Senegal is the standout. The co-hosts face one of the form sides of the qualified field: Senegal arrive on nine wins from their last 10 with seven clean sheets, and they share Group I with France. It is the toughest test the USA could have asked for, with the host priced at 67.00 for the tournament.
Brazil vs Panama gives Brazil, 9.00 in the outright market, a run-out against a Group D side. Brazil’s recent form has been mixed by their standards, three defeats in their last 10, and the warm-ups are the window to settle it before the Group C campaign.
Germany vs Finland pairs Germany, 13.00 outright, with non-qualified opposition in a controlled test ahead of Group E.
Mexico vs Australia is a meeting of co-host and a Group D side, with both managers still working towards their strongest starting eleven.
Ecuador vs Saudi Arabia brings together two of the more defensive sides in the field. Ecuador were unbeaten across their last 10; Saudi Arabia warm up for a Group H draw that places them alongside Spain.
The week ahead
The friendly window runs through to the eve of the tournament, with most of the bigger names still to play their final tests. Sunday’s results are the first real indication of where the qualified sides stand now the squads are close to settled.
